Columbia University, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science

New York, United States of America

Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BS, 4 years)

Grade de Master (Bac +5)|3 à 5 ans

Admissions

Admission rate of roughly 4.3%, among the lowest in the country. An international candidate submits an English test and falls under the F-1 visa. Columbia is need-aware for international students, the request for aid entering into the admission decision: the exact scope of the undertaking to meet need for a foreign candidate should be checked with the financial service before applying.

Who it is for

The school leaver with an exceptional scientific record, drawn to an engineering education in the middle of Manhattan. The school offers bachelor's degrees in biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical, computer, mechanical and industrial engineering, in materials science, in applied physics and applied mathematics, and in environmental engineering. One singularity of Columbia: engineering students follow an adapted version of the university's general-education core, with literature, philosophy, art and music. It is the only engineering school in the series to impose that foundation, and it is an argument for those who refuse a purely technical education.

Fees

$36,400 a semester, that is $72,800 a year, whatever the number of credits taken. A student enrolled for a ninth semester is charged per credit, at $2,342 a unit. Across four years, tuition alone therefore reaches $291,200, excluding housing in one of the most expensive cities in the United States. Since the aid regime applicable to an international candidate is not established, the prudent working assumption is the full rate, to be revised after checking.

Careers

Graduates join quantitative finance, investment banking, consulting and technology companies, with an obvious geographical advantage. Three years of Optional Practical Training under the STEM fields.

Master of Science in Engineering (1 to 2 years)

Grade de Master (Bac +5)|3 à 5 ans

Admissions

The application is submitted to the school, with charges of $85, identical for US and international candidates. The admission rate for the engineering master's degrees stands at roughly 28%, five times that of the university at graduate level across all disciplines, and more than six times that of the bachelor's cycle. An English test is required. Double, joint and executive formats complete the offering.

Who it is for

This is the most practicable route in this profile for a French-speaking candidate who already holds a degree. The school offers master's degrees in some twenty disciplines: applied mathematics and applied physics, biomedical engineering, business analytics, chemical, civil and computer engineering, computer science, construction engineering and management, data science, earth and environmental engineering, electrical engineering, financial engineering, industrial engineering, management science, materials science, mechanical engineering, medical physics and operations research. Several of those specialisms are rare in engineering schools and match the needs of New York employers.

Fees

Charging is per credit, at $2,700 a unit, full-time as part-time, that is roughly $56,840 a year full-time. Institutional aid to master's students is limited: assistantships exist but remain awarded by the departments, in priority to students headed for a thesis. International candidates most often fund themselves from personal resources or through an international student loan, several providers offering loans keyed to the cost of attendance communicated by the school, without a US guarantor. That last possibility deserves noting: most private American loans require a citizen or resident guarantor, which closes them to an African candidate.

Careers

Graduates join quantitative finance and the New York trading floors, consulting, technology companies, engineering and construction groups, or continue to a doctorate. Three years of Optional Practical Training.

Doctorate (PhD, 5 to 6 years)

Grade de Master (Bac +5)|3 à 5 ans

Admissions

Admission is department by department. As everywhere in the United States, entry to a doctorate is possible straight from the bachelor's degree, with no master's required. An international candidate submits an English test.

Who it is for

The researcher aiming at an academic career or an advanced research role, particularly at the intersection of engineering, health and finance. The ratio of four doctoral students per permanent faculty member, for 225 faculty, places supervision among the tightest of the major American schools.

Fees

This is the most favourable route in this profile. Doctoral students admitted to a research programme are funded by a combination of fellowships and assistantships, with tuition covered and a living stipend. Where the bachelor's cycle means $291,200 in tuition across four years and the master's close to $57,000 a year with no real institutional aid, the doctorate costs nothing and pays.

Careers

Doctorates lead to higher education, industrial research laboratories, teaching hospitals for biomedical engineering, and financial institutions for quantitative profiles. Three years of Optional Practical Training.
