By the end of 2024, nearly 998,000 international students held an active study permit, underscoring Canada’s sustained ability to attract global academic talent.

The Canadian higher education system is built on a broad yet well-balanced academic landscape. The country hosts 223 universities and 213 public community colleges across its provinces and territories. This institutional diversity allows international students to pursue research-oriented, professionally focused, or applied academic pathways within a multicultural, inclusive, and highly secure environment.

In research and innovation, Canada follows a targeted and pragmatic model, complementary to that of larger scientific powers. In 2023, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office recorded 35,620 patent applications, reflecting steady innovation activity. While more selective in scale, Canada’s scientific contribution remains meaningful: the country counts 28 Nobel laureates, particularly in medicine, chemistry, and physics.

Tuition costs, though rising, remain competitive relative to the international recognition of Canadian degrees. Average annual tuition for international students is approximately €24,500 at the undergraduate level and €14,300 for master’s programs. Living expenses are estimated at around €10,200 per year, excluding high-cost metropolitan areas such as Toronto or Vancouver.

For the issuance of a study permit, Canadian authorities require proof of sufficient financial resources. Between January 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025, a single student must demonstrate access to approximately €14,000 to cover living expenses (excluding tuition and travel). This threshold will increase to roughly €15,600 as of September 1, 2025, reflecting adjustments to the cost of student living. These requirements are designed to ensure financial stability and sustainable study conditions throughout the academic program.
